A Lush Wash Day Routine

A little self-care for you and your hair

For many, wash day isn’t simply a routine, it’s a ritual that often requires patience, dedication and a commitment to your hair—and, because everyone’s hair and routine are different, you’ve got to find what works for you and your hair.

Lots of things can affect how your hair is in the moment—from the changing seasons to how you’re styling—but the routine you choose for wash day will likely remain the same. And be patient: your wash day routine is going to be unique to your hair, so finding the right process and steps could be a whole lot of trial and error (and shelf full of products) to discover what your hair really needs to look and feel its natural best. But not to worry, we’ve got a few tips and Lush haircare goodies to help get you started and make self-care for you and your hair a little bit easier.

The pre-poo

While you may or may not choose to begin here, pre-poo or “before shampoo” is sometimes a good first step. Shampooing can be naturally drying and pre-pooing can help lock in extra moisture for dry hair or scalps. Renee´s Shea Souffle is an intensely hydrating hair and scalp oil that packs a rich blend of shea butter along with castor, coconut and avocado oils. You can use a wide-tooth comb for this but working the cream in with your fingers from scalp to tip can help massage it into places your comb might not get.

Detangling

There are a couple of different ways to detangle, but one thing is certain, never detangle hair dry. Do this during the pre-poo stage with Renee’s Shea Souffle or hop in the shower to wet your hair and work through any unwanted knots or tangles with your fingers.

Section and cleanse

While your hair is wet, part it into sections to help keep tangles to a minimum. Then, grab an SLS-free shampoo like Avocado Co-Wash and rub it into one section at a time, working it through your hair and scalp to ensure its fresh avocado, cupuaçu butter, cocoa butter and extra virgin olive oil blend nourishes as it gently cleanses.

Condition

Conditioning hair is an important step. Not only does it allow you to work out any pesky tangles and knots, but it helps to nourish and give your hair the nutrients and moisture it needs to feel healthy. Glory is a supremely rich conditioner that adds a healthy dose of serious hydration to curls, coils and textured hair that need it. Or, if your hair needs a little restorative love, Power is a protein-rich companion that hydrates, gives extra slip and repels humidity. Scoop your fave into your hands and take your time working through your hair, concentrating on the ends, leave on for 10 minutes or so, then rinse.

Post-wash

Now it’s time to lock in all that moisture you’ve worked so hard to get back into your hair and scalp. Super Milk is a light, lotion-y vegan leave-in made with almond, coconut and oat milks for a hit of smoothing, soothing softness—if you’re doing the LOC method, this one’s your first step. Or, if you need a little more moisture and hold, Curl Power is a nourishing hair cream with a rich blend of cocoa butter and coconut and jojoba oils to hydrate and protect—it’s also ideal for the final step in the LOC method. Apply to hair, then twist or braid to help hair absorb their softening and hydrating powers. Let dry. Then, untwist or unbraid and style as usual.

Between wash days? Grab Revive to keep hair hydrated especially at the ends. It’s a tropical-scented paradise of avocado butter, olive, jojoba and coconut oils, and candelilla wax that you simply work into wet or dry hair and go.
