Our Climate Commitment

We believe we all know what needs doing: moving away from fossil fuels, using cleaner transport, and protecting wildlife and planting forests, all while making customers happy and maintaining a viable business.

The science is clear. It’s imperative that we limit the rise in the earth’s temperature by human-caused activity to 1.5°C to limit the worst impacts of climate change on the planet and its inhabitants. We recognize that the most severe impacts from the climate crisis fall on those who are not those responsible for causing it, which strengthens our resolve to do everything we can to stay within the safe limits set by science.

Our business has an important role to play. To ensure our climate commitments are strong enough, and aligned to climate science, Lush North America has set science-based targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. Our targets are:

• To reduce Scope 1 and 2 (energy) greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030.
• To reduce Scope 3 (our transport, ingredients and packaging) greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030.

Campaigns and movement support

For more than a decade, Lush has campaigned for an end to fossil fuel extraction alongside climate justice organizations and frontline communities, which disproportionately experience the negative impacts of climate change. Our Charitable Giving Program has awarded grants to 911 organizations working on the root causes of climate change through grassroots-led solutions. From 2016 through 2022, this support has reached 19 million dollars. Lush is also on a journey to divest our finances from institutions that support the fossil fuel industry.

Ethical buying and Lush Investments

Our Ethical Buying team works to reduce our footprint by using our purchases to support suppliers who align with our values. Some of the ingredients we use have a positive impact, such as forest-grown ingredients like cocoa butter, murumuru butter, illipe butter, cupuaçu butter, and Brazil nut oil. All of which come from vital ecosystems and forest systems.

Since 2014, our Lush Investments team has been building independent, ethical and regenerative agri-businesses that supply Lush and others with 100 percent transparent and ethical materials. Conserving and restoring the land in these projects helps capture carbon dioxide, protect biodiversity, improve soil health, repair the local watershed, and elevate the livelihoods of communities around the world.

Our footprint

Our Environmental Ethos has been guiding us for years. We have made progress on reducing our ecological footprint through energy efficiency and management initiatives, sourcing renewable energy for our shops and manufacturing facilities, limiting air shipments, removing packaging where we can, and encouraging our employees to champion efforts at work and at home. We are working with staff, suppliers and other partners who support the business to decarbonize—and beyond—to scale renewable and regenerative initiatives, and a just transition.

This will drive our greenhouse gas emission reduction activities, in addition to our efforts to provide nature-based solutions through our Lush Investments, ethical sourcing and continued efforts as climate activists for climate justice.

*Full commitment:

Lush Cosmetics North America commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 75% by FY2030 from a FY2019 base year.**

Lush Cosmetics also commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel and energy related activities, upstream and downstream transportation and distribution, and business travel 50% within the same time frame.

**The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.
