Strengthen and Repair Your Hair

Five tips to maintain the strength and condition of your hair

Hair feeling limp and lifeless? Struggling with breakage or dull hair? We’ve got some quick tips to help you bring your crowning glory back from the brink.

1. Strengthen your hair with olive oil

Rich in reparative vitamins A and E, olive oil is one of our favorite haircare ingredients because of the effects it has on all hair types. In addition to giving hair a healthy, glossy sheen, olive oil can strengthen hair to make it resistant to breakage.

We use olive oil across our entire haircare range. but if we had to choose two must-try products that feature it, they’d have to be Rehab Shampoo and Retread Conditioner. If your hair is feeling worse for wear, try this dynamic duo for a week and we think you’ll be impressed with the results.

Rehab is a shampoo with a tropical juice blend of pineapple, papaya, kiwi and mango to remove excess oil, and it also has plenty of scalp-friendly essential oils: rosemary and lavender to soothe dry, itchy scalps, and juniper and peppermint to give you a refreshing tingle. Retread is our richest conditioner with lots of protein from ingredients like soy milk and organic yogurt to repair damaged hair. It’s also packed with protective ingredients like avocado oil and lanolin to give your hair a silky feel.

2. Once a week, treat yo’self (and your hair)

Blow drying, coloring and environmental damage are just a few things that can make your hair look and feel less than healthy. To counteract the wear and tear of daily life, give your hair some extra love from time to time: try a hair treatment chock full of moisturizing and strengthening ingredients to help restore hair to its ideal state. To use our hair treatments, apply generously to dry hair, then put your feet up for 20 minutes while the ingredients take effect. Next, hop in the shower or bath and shampoo the treatment out, following with conditioner if you’d like. Enjoy your soft, deeply conditioned hair.

All of our hair treatments are made with softening ingredients, but each has been formulated to have a different effect. Roots starts with a fresh mint infusion and has scalp-tingling peppermint and spearmint oils for a refreshing sensation and to promote strong, healthy hair. The addition of honey and extra virgin olive oil will ensure that even fine and thin hair gets the moisture it needs without being weighed down.

On the other hand, H'Suan Wen Hua, formulated for parched tresses, has richer ingredients like mashed bananas and avocados to soften and moisturize. Balsamic vinegar will leave hair glossy and shiny, while cinnamon leaf oil imparts a sexy, spicy perfume that lingers.

3. Don’t shampoo too often

Washing your hair too often can strip it of its natural oils, drying it out and leaving it limp and lifeless. Sound familiar? We suggest cutting down to washing once every other day. Though you may find that your hair and scalp are oilier for a week or two, don’t give up! Your body will eventually adjust and normalize the amount of oil it produces until you’re left with hair that’s just right--not too greasy and not too dry.

While you wait for that oily phase to pass, use No Drought Dry Shampoo to absorb all that excess oil with cornstarch and talc: just sprinkle this grapefruit and lime-scented powder on your roots before shaking it through your hair with your hands or combing it through with a brush.

4. Try co-washing

Still want to wash your hair daily but don’t want to dry it out? Co-washing, or using conditioner in place of shampoo, could be the solution you’re looking for. By washing with conditioner instead, you can keep hair clean without stripping it of natural oils.

To co-wash, get your hair wet, then take a small amount of conditioner (about a teaspoon’s worth) and massage it into your scalp in the same way that you would lather up a shampoo. Your fingers will loosen up dirt and residue along your roots to be washed away. After you’ve rinsed, take your regular amount of conditioner and condition as usual, using your fingers or a wide tooth comb to detangle and distribute the product through the length of your hair before rinsing again.

Avocado Co-Wash is our take on the ideal co-washing product, with just the right amount of cleansing ingredients to give you a freshly washed feel without stripping hair. This sweet and citrusy co-wash is made with loads of avocado, cocoa butter and cupuacu butter to soften and hydrate, as well as apple cider vinegar for long-lasting shine.

5. Take a break from heat styling

Curling wands, blow dryers and flat irons are useful tools for creating a look, but using them every day can tax your hair in a serious way. Give your hair a day or two off after heat styling to let it recover, and take the opportunity to experiment with some fun, lower-maintenance styles.

Playing around with braids? Apply some sweet almond-scented Queen Bee to your hair before you get twisting to nourish your hair with a softening combo of cocoa butter, honey and argan oil. Putting your hair up in a ponytail or bun? Spritz with Sunny Day to brush through tangles with ease and keep frizz at bay all day long with the help of honey, aloe vera and fresh lemon.
