What Goes into Charity Pot

Charity Pot is a self-preserving, floral-scented, and vegan body lotion that spreads some good. It’s made from organic, sustainable and ethically-sourced ingredients from farming communities and co-ops around the world. For every ingredient we use, Lush’s Ethical Buying and Lush Investments teams work with farmers to move beyond buying responsibly to investing in ethical agriculture that can rehabilitate the land and support communities from the ground up.

Moringa oil

Our moringa oil comes from seeds purchased from farmers in northern Uganda, which are then processed at our solar-powered factory near the city of Gulu. By being a guaranteed buyer of moringa at a fair price, Lush has offered farmers incentives to plant this tree while providing a pathway to a strong income. Sesame is also grown alongside fruit trees to increase biodiversity, tree cover, and food security.

Aloe vera

Our aloe vera comes from the Nabulu Women’s Aloe Group in the arid region of Laikipia, Kenya. Over time, the women have been converting the desert land, introducing nutritious plants, alongside aloe, to improve both the land and the Maasai diet.

Cocoa butter

Charity Pot’s cocoa butter comes from the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó in North West Colombia and they are one of Lush’s most extraordinary suppliers. The Peace Community was founded against a backdrop of violence and intimidation by the army, leftist guerilla fighters and right-wing paramilitary groups. Despite the ongoing conflict in the area, they continue to live peacefully, while growing and harvesting cocoa beans.

Shea butter

Our shea butter comes from the Ojoba Women’s Shea Cooperative in Bolgatanga, Ghana. Traditionally, the Fare-Fare people are subsistence farmers who must often leave their community to seek work elsewhere due to arid conditions and low crop yields in the dry season. The 600-member cooperative provides the women with a reliable source of income all year round. The women collect, sort, and wash the nuts from the karite trees that grow wildly in the local environment before processing the shea butter by hand.

Jojoba oil

The jojoba oil in Charity Pot comes from Hyder Valley in Arizona. A notoriously sensitive plant, Lush has been working with Jojoba Jalisco to help rehabilitate old jojoba farms and create conditions where jojoba can thrive. Other blocks of land are being planted with native desert species purely for habitat restoration purposes. We’re proud to say the farms are thriving and by revitalizing the land and producing organic jojoba in an environmentally responsible way, the community will have increasingly reliable employment.

Our packaging

Our values don’t stop at our ingredients. We believe in a zero-waste philosophy. Charity Pot comes in a 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic black pot. We encourage customers to return their empty and clean pots back to their local Lush for recycling. We have them broken down and remolded into new pots as part of our closed-loop recycling program. We also offer a naked Charity Pot Coin—a solid, packaging free version that also spreads a whole lot of good. We’re making zero-waste possible with 65 percent of our products being packaging-free.

100 percent donated

When you purchase either our potted Charity Pot Body Lotion or its naked counterpart, 100 percent of the purchase price (minus the taxes) goes to our charitable giving fund, which supports small grassroots organizations on the front lines of human rights, animal protection, and environmental justice.
